Attitude at work can be more important than qualifications

When we at Kloodle speak to companies, one of the biggest recruitment issues they tell us they face is just how to separate out the serious candidates from the many applications they receive. According to a report by the Recruitment and Employment Confederation (REC), the most important factor highlighted, for almost half of the 600 employers taking part in the survey, when choosing a candidate is the ‘attitude’. The level of qualifications was the most important factor for only 20%, with specific qualifications the main concern for 4% of those surveyed.
This poses a dilemma for students. Obviously doing well in exams is important and without the minimum level or requisite qualifications then you won’t even be considered for a position. However, it is not the only thing you should be focussed on.
So, what constitutes a ‘good attitude’ for work? According to internships.com, it’s displaying a strong work ethic, good time management skills, being reliable, honest, adaptable and confident.

These are skills you need to be able to demonstrate that you have gained from your life experience and you can start thinking about them whilst you are still at university. They are behaviours which apply to everyday life.
Many firms have their own distinct culture and worry about whether new staff recruited will gel into the system. A number have adopted the ‘Values Based Recruitment’ approach; they search for students and prospective employees who display behaviours which are aligned to those of the organisation they are applying for work at. Employees with these characteristics are more likely to fit into the company’s ethos and therefore more likely to enjoy a long-term career. When you are applying to an employer, research their values and consider whether you are what they are looking for. Examples are the NHS or social care employment.
